Bulldogs News · Defiance College Adds Scott HS Tennis Star Destiny “Desi” Oshodin

Amidst a celebratory throng of shrieks and cheers, Desi Oshodin’s eyes welled up with tears as she hugged her coach. Desi had accomplished what once seemed impossible by leading the Scott High School Varsity Girl’s Tennis Team to its first ever Toledo City League championship in 2017. As the only junior on a team consisting of eight seniors and herself, Desi was unanimously chosen by her coach and peers as team captain. “Desi’s positive attitude, work ethic, leadership and her ability to overcome adversity contributed immensely to our success last year,” says Coach Kyle Clark.

On May 14, 2019 Desi signed her letter of intent to play tennis at Defiance College in the fall, becoming the first Scott tennis player to take her talents to the next level in over 20 years. She earned First Team All-City honors and made the All-Academic team this year as a senior. Coach Clark, who also served as her African American Studies teacher, AVID 11, and AP Comparative Government and Politics teacher, notes that “Desi is naturally inquisitive and an exceptionally self-motivated learner.” These qualities have contributed to Desi currently being ranked 6/122 in her graduating class while earning a 3.8 cumulative GPA.

Desi’s academic success is all the more amazing when considering the amount of time she spent on the tennis court. Desi would regularly stay at the courts for hours after practice to play with professionals and members of the Ottawa Park Tennis Association. She became somewhat of a local sensation as community members gave her free lessons, bought her shoes and rackets, and showed up en masse to her matches.

Desi is genuinely a wonderful person. Her positive attitude is contagious and her wit and personality will take her far in life. Coach Clark boasts that “Desi is hilarious and literally makes me laugh every time I see her.” No one who has seen Desi play for Scott over the past four years is surprised by her success. Desi is a focused and skilled athlete who will be looked to as a leader as she continues her tennis career as a Yellow Jacket at Defiance College.
